Update June 2023

Works progress, site management and access

Works progress

Works for the West Head Lookout upgrade commenced in May 2023. These include rebuilding the existing sandstone retaining wall, installing a balustrade on the lower wall, and a new garden bed and seating wall along the main viewing area. A balustrade along the northern perimeter of the lookout is also being installed, and the existing bronze map and timber seating will be retained.

These upgrades are expected to be completed in November 2023, subject to weather and other unforeseen issues.

Site management and access

The lookout area has now been securely fenced and is a construction zone. West Head Road is closed from the Resolute Picnic Area onwards, and visitors have no access to the West Head Lookout.

For your safety, please do not enter any fenced areas.

Resolute Picnic Area, Resolute Track, Aboriginal Heritage Walk, and Red Hands Track remain open, and the breathtaking scenery of West Head Beach, Resolute Beach, and Mackerel Beach all provide excellent locations for visitors to West Head.

Please take care if you're visiting Resolute Picnic Area and the surrounding open tracks and beaches, and follow any signage or instructions from National Parks and Wildlife Service or contractor staff.

Vehicle message boards have been installed along McCarrs Creek Rd at McCarrs Creek, Ingleside, and West Head Rd, notifying visitors of the closure.
