Regional studies
Regional studies cover a broader geographic area. All existing information on flora and/or fauna is pulled together to build a regional picture of conservation issues for use in planning and management. OEH has conducted a number of such studies in the Greater Sydney area. Find out more below.
Greater Southern Sydney
A large study covering the entire southern Blue Mountains, south-west Sydney and northern Illawarra, this project mapped fauna habitats, corridors and prioritised threatened species for conservation action. You can download a general audience report or accompanying technical reports. A companion project for the fauna of Greater Northern Sydney is planned for the near future.
Illawarra
This bioregional assessment study covered the Illawarra north of Lake Illawarra. Detailed vegetation mapping and fauna assessment, including habitat modelling are included in the reports. Download more information about the reports below. Digital copies of the reports and GIS layers of habitat models and vegetation mapping are available from OEH.

The Department has been involved in several flora and fauna studies in the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority Area. This catchment covers from Holsworthy to Narrabeen Lagoon, including all of the Georges River, Cooks and Parramatta River catchments. Reports can be downloaded from the SMCMA website, see links below.
