Visitor Centre construction update
Contractors Gartner-Rose Pty Ltd are now on site at Kurnell and have started construction works around the park.
Construction of the new Visitor Centre is underway. The new building will offer improved visitor facilities, exhibition space, education and learning areas and park operations. Consultation in 2016 revealed wide support for a new centre and, for the facility to include greater recognition of Aboriginal history and culture. Demolition of the old centre took place in November 2024 and completion is scheduled for 2026.
Cricket Pitch precinct open
Upgrades to the Cricket Pitch are complete and opened to visitors on Saturday 12 April 2025. There are now 34 additional car spaces, including parking and path connections that comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, bicycle racks and water bottle filling stations.
A new amenity building has been constructed at the precinct similar to the recently completed building at Commemoration Flat. It replaces the old, corroded steel amenities with a durable building constructed using precast concrete panels and timber battens.
The carpark and facilities are now open, however additional works will be occurring over the coming months. This includes new tree planting and the provision of seating.
Rehabilitation of the freshwater stream has also been completed. Concrete piped sections of the creek have been removed and the natural creek bed restored. A slow-flow pond area has been created to provide habitat for wildlife such as frogs. Extensive planted areas have been added which will establish over the coming months. A new pedestrian walkway has been built across the stream connecting the upgraded Cricket Pitch to the future new Visitor Centre.
Foreshore path works
Construction of new pathways within Commemoration Flat started in March 2025.
These works will be staged and continue throughout April and May with fencing in place around the work locations as shown in the plan below:
- A short, accessible compliant path has been constructed behind Alpha House.
- A new section of pathway will link the existing path near the Solander Monument to the Commemoration Flat amenities, and the new Visitor Centre.
Visitor access to the whale sculptures will be maintained while these works occur.
There will be minor disruptions to the Commemoration Flat carpark during the Foreshore Path works to allow safe access to Commemoration Flat by the contractor.
Installation of new service connections to the Commemoration Flat amenity building will occur at the same time as the path works.
Other works programmed for completion throughout 2025 and 2026 include:
- new upgraded water and electrical services which will replace the aged and undersized existing services
- improved access for all works, with new compliant pathways and parking.
Fire trail upgrades
Upgrades and maintenance of all national park fire trails in Kurnell will commence in April. This includes upgrades to comply with the NSW Rural Fire Service Fire Trail Standards (for Strategic Fire Trails) and vegetation trimming and surface repairs (for Tactical Fire Trails).
Comprehensive environmental assessment and ecological surveys have been completed, and works are expected to take 5 to 7 weeks to complete. Closures will be in place for the duration of works, although walking tracks will remain open where possible.
Kurnell anchor
Improving the park entry and arrival point was detailed as part of the Master Plan. This was considered to be a high priority by respondents during the 2018 Master Plan consultation.
One of the actions listed in the Plan was the removal of the replica anchor and brick wall which were installed in 1972 off Cape Solander Drive. These works were completed in early April.
NPWS will be relocating the anchor to another location within the park. The anchor will also undergo restoration and repair works before being reinstalled.
New Interpretation Plan released for consultation
National Parks and Wildlife Service has prepared a new Interpretation Plan as part of the infrastructure upgrades at Kurnell. A significant body of work related to storytelling and interpretation at Kurnell has been completed since 2007. This plan has reviewed and considered this previous work and existing interpretation devices to develop a sustainable, respectful and consistent approach to revising and refreshing interpretation in the Kurnell landscape.
Following the Meeting of Two Cultures event organised by Sutherland Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service will be hosting a drop in session from 12.00pm to 2.00pm on 29 April 2025 at Alpha House.
The Interpretation Plan will be on display and National Parks and Wildlife Service staff will be available to answer your questions. This plan will also be available to download from the project webpage from 28 April. Comments and feedback can be made via the webpage until 23 May 2025.
Visitation impacts
If you’re planning to visit, please be aware that major precincts are closed during the construction phase, and signage and fencing will be in place during this time. Some work areas will be relocated as work elements such as paths and inground services are completed.
Please check the National Parks and Wildlife Service current alerts when planning your visit.&
