History

A timber ship of 1204 tons, built at Massachusetts, USA, in 1874, of 1141 gross. Lost 3 July 1884 when tug’s tow rope fouled at night. Passing steamer Afghan caught vessel before tow lost again. Anchors let go but grounded on the beach near Shepherds Hill.  Attempts by the crew to reach shore in ship’s boats. Captain Carver rescued his wife from sea when vessel broke apart, together with his dog, ship's cat and a canary!  No lives eventually lost after Rocket Brigade arrived next morning and secured a safety line ashore. Susan Gilmore Beach earned its name from event.  Wreck site not located.
