Perisher Range Resorts services

The National Parks and Wildlife Service manages services such as water, waste water, rubbish and in-resort roads in the Perisher Range.

The Perisher Range resorts include Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Guthega and Blue Cow. There are additional resort leases along Kosciuszko Road including Sawpit Creek, Wilsons Valley (Ski Rider) and Diggers Creek (Sponars).

Water is provided to the village areas from Rock Creek, Piper’s Creek, Farm Creek and Sawpit Creek. It undergoes ultraviolet disinfection prior to distribution through the reticulation network.

NPWS operates two sewage treatment plants, one at Perisher Valley and one at Sawpit Creek. The Perisher Valley sewage treatment plant treats sewage effluent collected from Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes and Guthega, while the Sawpit Creek plant treats all wastewater from the Kosciuszko Mountain Retreat tourist park.

Each sewage treatment plant operates under an environment protection licence issued by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

Waste water guideline

The Wastewater Pre-treatment Guideline (PDF 1.4MB) applies to all premises within the Perisher Range resort areas that discharge wastewater to the Perisher Range sewerage system.

The document covers domestic grease traps, commercial grease traps, trade waste separators, pools and spas.

Making sure that wastewater pre-treatment systems are installed and are in good condition results in significant benefits to the sewerage system and environment.

Pollution incident response management plans

The Protection of the Environment Legislation Amendment Act 2011 requires pollution incident response management plans to be prepared and implemented for the Perisher and Sawpit Creek sewage treatment plants.

Sewage treatment monitoring data

The monitoring data is collected in accordance with the environment protection licences for Perisher and Sawpit Creek sewage treatment plants.

Waste stored at the Perisher Valley waste transfer station is taken to the Jindabyne landfill, while recyclables are transported out of the park for sorting by a contractor to distribute to recycling markets in NSW.

Winter

NPWS operates a waste collection service during the ski season for Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes premises. Waste is collected by a contractor daily or twice a week and is transported to the Perisher Valley waste transfer station. Waste and recyclables in Guthega are collected from the waste transfer area at the Guthega Ski Centre.

Charlotte Pass Village waste is transported to the Perisher Valley waste transfer station.

Summer

There is no waste collection service in summer. Premises are required to bring their waste and recyclables to the waste transfer station.

During the ski season most internal roads within Perisher Range resorts are snow covered and only accessible by oversnow transport.

A commercial operator licensed by NPWS provides public oversnow transport operations in Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes and Guthega.

NPWS maintains the snow-covered internal roads in Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes and Guthega, using snow cats to groom the surfaces and provide safe access to lodges and other places.
