The road into the campground precinct, Sandon River Road, is sometimes inundated by high tides. Sandon Beach has experienced erosion and has receded over time, impacting the sand dunes along the coast, pedestrian and 4-wheel-drive access to the beach, and the northern section of the campground.

Both inundation and coastal erosion are expected to increasingly impact Sandon River Road and the campground over time and artificial intervention may not be able to stop nature taking its course.

As part of the Clarence Valley Open Coast Coastal Management Program, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has prepared a draft coastal hazard response plan for Sandon River campground, which includes detailed coastal hazard studies, and an assessment of potential management options, and a recommended management approach.

The draft Sandon River campground coastal hazard response plan is available for public feedback until 29 July 2024.
