The two-year wilderness horse riding trial was conduced to assess the appropriateness of horse riding in wilderness areas. The trial assessed horse riding on designated tracks and trails in wilderness areas across New South Wales.

To ensure that wilderness values were adequately protected from potential impacts during the horse riding trial, a monitoring program was developed to detect and mitigate impacts to the key values of these areas. Independent experts from the University of Melbourne facilitated a process in which stakeholders, scientific experts and operational staff worked together to develop the overarching monitoring framework to be applied to the trial.
