May 2024 update

Construction work on the new seawall and bleachers is progressing on site.

Construction progress

Western end: formwork and reinforcement are being installed for the mid-level terrace concrete pour. The old promenade slab has been demolished to make way for upper bleacher tiers and a new promenade footpath.

Eastern end: shotcrete sprayed by the contractor stabilises sand and ballast layers for bleacher reinforcement. Multiple concrete pours will construct the western bleachers tier-by-tier over the next few weeks. These will be monitored closely during curing, ensuring the structure achieves a 100-year lifespan.

Dressing shed tunnel: reconstruction of the new entrance has begun, with new footings poured to support the entrance wing walls. The contractor has installed temporary props to support the existing heritage tunnel structure during the reconstruction works. A new tunnel entry slab will be poured soon.

Access ramp: the temporary ramp has been removed, allowing soil movement for pedestrian and vehicle ramps. Foundation piles will be excavated in the coming weeks to connect with a capping beam and ramp structure.

Weather impact

The heavy rain lately has made the site very wet and slowed down our work, especially because we can’t pour concrete in this weather. This might cause some delays in finishing the project, depending on the weather in the next few weeks. We’ll let you know if there are any changes to completion dates.

Visitor access

Shark Beach: closed for safety during construction.

Visitors should avoid entering the construction site through fencing or water.

Despite delays, we aim to meet the 100-year design life for this vital public infrastructure. All parties involved are working hard to achieve overall completion as soon as possible.
