Panesthia lata Walker, 1868 - critically endangered species listing

The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee, established under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (the Act), has made a final determination to list the Lord Howe Island wood-feeding cockroach Panesthia lata Walker, 1868 as a critically endangered species in Part 1 of Schedule 1 of the Act and, as a consequence, to omit reference to The Lord Howe Island wood-feeding cockroach Panesthia lata Walker, 1868 in Part 2 of Schedule 1 (Endangered species) of the Act.

The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995, made a final determination to list the Lord Howe Island wood-feeding cockroach Panesthia lata Walker 1868 as an endangered species in Part 1 of Schedule 1 of the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 on 13 February 2004. The final determination and conservation assessment report published on 11 April 2025 has found that the species is eligible for listing as critically endangered on the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 schedules. The report provides an updated assessment for the risk of extinction for the taxon against the criteria in the Biodiversity Conservation Regulation 2017 using the Common Assessment Method. The Common Assessment Method is the agreed method for assessing the extinction risk of species by the Australian Government and all state and territory governments.
