The 2008 Kosciuszko National Park Horse Management Plan remains the current plan for the management of horses in the park.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service, part of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, has a legal duty to protect the range of natural and cultural values within Kosciuszko National Park, and a responsibility to minimise the impact of introduced species, including wild horses. However, the issue of wild horse management within the park is often highly contentious and emotive. The diverse range of standpoints in the general community include deeply polarised views between major stakeholder groups about if and how wild horses in the park should be managed.
