Budelah Nature Reserve conserves the endangered ecological communities of Coolibah-Black Box Woodland and Carbeen Open Forest; threatened animal species such as the Glossy Black-cockatoo, Bush Stone-curlew, Australian Bustard and Barking Owl; and the historic “Athlone” homestead precinct.

It is part of the traditional country of the Kamilaroi Aboriginal people and contains over 50 Aboriginal sites, including artefact scatters, scarred trees and a shell midden.
