This document is the pest management strategy for the Northern Tablelands Region, which stretches from the NSW–Queensland border in the north, to below Walcha and Tamworth in the south and from around Warialda/Gunnedah in the west to half way down the escarpment in the east.
Mummel Gulf National Park and Mummel Gulf State Conservation Area are located approximately 40 kilometres south-east of Walcha and 85 kilometres west of Wauchope. Mummel Gulf National Park covers an area of 14,127 hectares, while Mummel Gulf State Conservation Area is 1162 hectares in size.
The plans of management for Far South Coast Escarpment Parks, Kosciuszko National Park and Mummel Gulf National Park and State Conservation Area were previously amended in 2014 to enable a two-year trial of horse riding in wilderness areas. The trial finished in April 2016 and horse riding in these locations is no longer authorised. Initial monitoring results indicate there has been low usage and low environmental risks. It is now proposed to amend the plans of management to allow horse riding to continue in the same wilderness locations until 31 December 2017, while the full evaluation of the trial is undertaken.
This consultation document describes proposed amendments for 3 plans of management to enable horse riding to continue in designated wilderness locations. Public consultation for this document closed on 7 August 2018.
The amendments to Far South Coast Escarpment Parks Plan of Management, Kosciuszko National Park Plan of Management and Mummel Gulf National Park and State Conservation Area Plan of Management enable horse riding to continue in specific wilderness areas. These amendments were adopted by the Minister for the Environment on 13 February 2019.
