Hazard reduction burn for Murrah Flora Reserves
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn south of Bermagui in the Murrah Flora Reserves from 1 June, weather permitting.
The 350-hectare burn will be conducted just off Murrah River Road and Horse Head Road to help protect nearby properties and assets, including the Murrah, Bunga, Tanja and Cuttagee communities.
This hazard reduction burn is essential to reduce naturally accumulated fuel loads in the Reserves, to protect biodiversity and park neighbours in the event of future wildfires.
Murrah River Road, Correa Road and Horse Head Road will be closed for the duration of the burn.
Tracks and trails in this area will also be closed for visitor safety during the operation and reopened when the area is assessed as safe. Visitors can keep up to date on temporary closures at NPWS Alerts.
Smoke may be visible in the Flora Reserves and surrounding areas, including Murrah and Cuttagee.
Motorists should use caution when driving on Tathra-Bermagui Road where smoke may be visible.
People vulnerable to smoke are encouraged to remain indoors and keep their doors and windows closed to reduce exposure.
All hazard reduction burns around the state are coordinated with the NSW RFS to ensure the impact on the community is assessed at a regional level.
People with known health conditions can sign up to receive air quality reports, forecasts and alerts via email or SMS from the Department of Planning and Environment.
For health information relating to smoke from bush fires and hazard reduction burning, visit the NSW Health website or Asthma Australia.
More information on hazard reduction activities is available at NSW Rural Fire Service and the NSW Government's 'Hazards Near Me' website and app.
