Record koala sightings with the improved I Spy Koala app

An improved I Spy Koala app has been released that allows anyone in NSW to record koala sightings. Users can enter information about the location and condition of the koala, as well as photos and other information.

Recording koala sightings is crucial to help the NSW Government understand and protect this endangered species. Data collected from I Spy Koala informs:

  • environmental managers
  • land managers
  • the community about koala distribution
  • the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water to help develop long-term conservation strategies to secure healthy koala populations in the wild.

All data submitted via the app is made publicly available by the department through the NSW Government's Sharing and Enabling Environmental Data (SEED) portal. 

I Spy Koala has received significant upgrades, including:

  • better app stability and performance
  • easier and more user-friendly interface
  • dedicated I Spy Koala project team for customer support
  • new data processing approach that uploads your records monthly to the Sharing and Enabling Environmental Data map Koala Sightings – BioNet
