The historic site was handed back to the Ngiyampaa Wangaaypuwan Aboriginal owners in July 2004 and leased back to the Minister under Part 4A of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.

The Mount Grenfell Historic Site, Proposed Mount Grenfell National Park and Part 11 Land Plan of Management was prepared by the Mount Grenfell Board of Management and is a significant landmark in the ongoing journey for Ngiyampaa People in reconnecting with Country and passing on traditional knowledge to the next generation. The plan will guide joint management of the reserves by the Board together with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
